‘Turner & Dreamlands’ Drawing Retreat Weekend with Molly Martin

'Turner & Dreamlands' Drawing Retreat Weekend with Molly Martin
from £210.00

Join Molly Martin for a two-day drawing & painting workshop weekend inspired by William Turner, working with the same sky, sea and shoreline, bathed in Margate’s famous ‘magic light’ from where Turner himself lived and worked.

The weekend is all about playfulness and spontaneity, as well as using the imagination! No previous drawing experience is necessary and all materials will be provided.

The workshop runs from 11am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Attendance on both days is required and a simple, vegetarian lunch will be provided on each day.

Day 1

Taking inspiration from Turner’s vivid and abstracted sketchbooks, we will begin the weekend drawing within the elements! We will collect imagery from the sea, sky and foreshore along the Margate coastline (just a stones throw away from Kindred House’s doorstep). Here, Molly will guide attendees with useful tips and helpful advice on how to record their surroundings with a fluid and honest eye, with a focus on pencil line and simple mark making.

Back in the warmth of the Kindred House studio we will draw from our findings (with plenty of tea and biscuits!) creating charcoal drawings, exploring depth, tone and expression.

In the afternoon, looking at Turner’s imaginative landscapes and use of dramatic light, we will experiment painting in gouache and watercolour - working from our charcoal drawings as well as a wide selection of source imagery, provided to support our drawing styles and inspire new marks and brush strokes.

Day 2

For Day two, we will delve deeper into imagination drawings, collage and painting - looking at further inspiration from Turners notes, watercolours and Greek mythology paintings.

To begin the day, we will start at the Turner Contemporary for a spot of inspiration, sketchbook drawing and a look at the beautiful view from the gallery foyer - an ever-changing scene of colour and atmosphere minute to minute!

Back at the studio we will be working from our sketchbooks and source imagery to create paper collages that look at dreamscapes and the imagination.

After lunch we will spend the afternoon developing our collages into more finalised artworks that reflect our findings and discoveries from the weekend.

Please note: The workshop weekend is limited to 8 places to ensure a more intimate experience. If dates need to change, you’ll be able to swap to the new date or obtain a refund if unable to make the new date. Should you need to cancel your booking, we will try our best to fill your spot, otherwise tickets are non-refundable.

Please get in touch if you would like an option to pay in instalments.
